LeadTip #34 Wisdom Trumps Feelings

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established. Proverbs 24:3-4

You often hear the words, “ this is how I feel.” Feelings are fleeting and deceiving, they come and go. Feelings will often contradict the teachings of scripture, and will lead to making really dumb decisions and even to sin.

I am always praying for the church and especially for its leaders. The health of any church is dependent upon the health of its leaders. And the spiritual, emotional and even physical health of people in general is based upon making wise choices and decisions.

This is why I take time to write LeadTips. Please take time to read all of them. They will be arrows in your quiver. My hope is to provide you with what my wife Lori and I have learned over the past 40 years from our experience as leaders in the corporate and church world - also, as a long time married couple, parents and now grandparents.

We are blessed to have had and still have strong and wise prophetic and apostolic leaders to learn from who have built godly homes and powerful churches influencing our world.

✓ It's important for leaders to be wise and to understand it is wisdom that builds God's house and your own house as well.

Sad to say many people operate by feelings that contradict Biblical principles and end up thinking somehow God is in it. You can see from the fruit of their lives and even ministries that wisdom is lacking.

✓ Living by principle over feelings wins every time.

Wisdom is supreme; so acquire wisdom. Proverbs 4:7

Do not be afraid to speak truth in love when you know something is not right and does not represent the values and teaching of scripture and the church. I understand that sometimes for the sake of not wanting to hurt someone's feelings leaders may remain silent when the opposite is needed. Remember even the Apostle Peter had to be corrected by the Apostle Paul and it is recorded in the Bible for all to see - for our learning. Of course all correction must be done in love and with respect.

✓ Remember, we all benefit from godly guidance, correction and even discipline. Accountability is beneficial and protective. It is a good thing.

For example, over the years I have had to ask people in the church to come under the Biblical organizational structure we have in our community of churches. Some people want to start ministries, others hold Bible studies, and yet others want to raise money for good causes. We can do all of this, but with proper oversight and under the protective covering of church eldership and wisdom. We experience great accomplishments when things are done in decency and in order and with Biblical wisdom and unity.

✓ Not everyone will agree with what we see as the Biblical model for a home and for a church.

They may lack Biblical teaching and wisdom. They may not have had wise role models and or a healthy church background. Some people may just be used to operating by emotion and are unwise in their thinking. Others are just outright not teachable, not humble and or do not want accountability.

We will leave the judgement to God. But ultimately the intent of a person’s heart and their level of wisdom and God’s approval upon their decisions will show by their fruit, good and bad, and or lack of it.

Wisdom is supreme!
