LeadTip #60 Get Wisdom

Proverbs 4:7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Oxford Languages defines wisdom as β€œthe soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment.”

  • Avoid Bad Decisions
So many bad decisions can be avoided by first examining Biblical principles, and then seeking godly counsel from elders that have Biblical knowledge, practical experience, a blessed life, and years of proven ministry. Too many life altering decisions are made by emotions, enticement of carnal desires and false promises, offense, pride, bad judgment and or hyper spiritualization and misinterpretation of scripture.

  • Be Careful Who You Listen To

It would not be wise to seek financial advice from someone who does not have success in dealing with money. Nor would it be wise to get marriage counseling from someone who does not have a successful marriage.  Yet, over the past 40 years of ministry, I have seen people throw wisdom out the window while making important decisions in life. Even Christians that appear spiritual, can lack wisdom. Be careful in examining the fruit of a person, church, organization, etc. before deciding to follow their advice or counsel.

Matthew 7: 16 You will know them by their fruits

  • God Gives A Road Map and Guides
God has given us the Bible, the most extensive source of wisdom, to guide us and protect us through life. He also gives us the church, whose head is Jesus Christ, and ordained spiritual leaders with Biblical knowledge and experience to watch over our souls.

Hebrews 13:7 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority (Biblical wisdom and proven experience), because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.

It does not matter if you are a nice person, have a good heart, good intentions, and or are spiritually gifted, poor decisions have consequences. I have seen people derail their lives, marriages, and children by violating the wisdom of the Bible and not adhering to the good judgment of spiritual elders.

Seek wisdom and understanding before making life altering decisions.  God wants the best for our lives.
