LeadTip #49 Discernment

“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11 NIV

Christian leadership is superior to secular leadership as it concerns itself with the spiritual aspects of life. One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is discernment, as we see in 1 Corinthians 12:10. Discernment is the knowing of something that cannot be seen in the natural or material realm.

✓ You cannot pinpoint what you are sensing and feeling, but you know something is concerning you. This is discernment. The Holy Spirit within you is speaking and guiding.

Someone may have a great resume and appear to have the gifts and talents needed to fill a job or ministry position. But there is something bothering you regarding the applicant. You must value and pay attention to your discernment.

✓ The Holy Spirit gives Christian leaders discernment.

Discernment is a powerful tool of protection and supernatural wisdom. A Christian leader has what a secular leader does not have, the Holy Spirit. You must be attentive to His voice and guidance. Many mistakes will be avoided by listening to the discernment given by the Holy Spirit.

✓ Discernment must be practiced, tested and affirmed.

When you are discerning something, it is wise to further research what you are sensing. Go deeper into confirming what you are feeling or hearing in your spirit. Get more references, ask more questions, speak to those with greater knowledge than you, get wisdom.

✓ Doctors practice medicine. Christians should practice discernment.

As you practice your discernment, you will gain a greater understanding as to how the Holy Spirit speaks to you.

Many Christians are living life without realizing God has given them an extra ordinary perception of things that may not be visible to the naked eye. Discernment is a great gift! Just being attentive to discernment will increase your ability to make wise and godly decisions.
